Abstract

Hemangiosarcomas are malignant tumors of the vascular endothelium. These tumors are particularly important in dogs, since in this species they have relatively high incidence and cause high mortality. The most dangerous are hemangiosarcomas arising on the auricle of the right atrium, which, without any previous signs, may cause fatal rupture of the right atrium and subsequent cardiac tamponade. This short review describes the basic biology and pathology of this neoplasm in dogs, using one typical case from practice as an illustrative example.
