Abstract
The decision on implementing chemical control in integrated pest management should be based exclusively on the estimated pest population level. It is justified only if the expected yield loss is higher than the management cost multiplied with the estimated ecological damage. In the paper, the types of the damages caused by insect pests are described together with the factors determining ecological damage and profitability factor. The relationship between economic injury level (EIL) and action threshold (AT) is explained. EIL is taking into account the estimated value of saved yield loss, cost of the control and ecological damage. AT or economic threshold is represented by the pest density (often lower than EIL or expressed in different measurements units) to carry out chemical control. It is the most important to know for every farmer. The example of wireworms and leaf surface feeding cutworms was used to illustrate when EIL is the same as the AT and then and why AT differs from EIL. AT is very similar to EIL if the damaging pest developmental stage has been estimated and if the further pest population fluctuation is not expected. If the population fluctuation is estimated (i.e. if the adults are forecast to predict larval population), AT is less accurate.
