Abstract

Modern medicine is increasingly emphasizing the need to understand and apply a holistic approach to individual health care. Independently of medical advances, partnerships between individuals and healthcare professionals at almost all levels of health care remain diffi cult to establish. Health professionals have always been interested in why some people, because of their poor health, do not want to cooperate and make efforts to change their unhealthy lifestyle habits. The answer to this and similar questions is provided by the motivational interview. The aim of this paper is to summarize important and useful facts that should serve health care professionals in practicing at all levels of health care. The paper describes theoretical assumptions of the transtheoretical model and client-centered approach as a basis for understanding the motivational interview and its application in everyday work with patients and in some cases their family members.
