Abstract

With the development of computer technology, the occurrence of numerical relay devices for protection in substations has become more common which are then programmed to control the electrical distribution network.
The paper present operation principle of admittance protection, calculation and recommendation for activating admittance protection for 20 kV feeders in system with low-ohmic and parallel compensation grounding. Admittance relay protection is used for detection of sensitive earth faults which operates a trip signal for opening feeder's circuit breaker. Admittance protection is more complex than traditionally used earth fault protections which are using residual current and voltage conditions. For a proper protection use, it is necessary to calculate the value of zero admittance, which is elaborated in this paper. Activation of admittance relay protection is possible with a new series of numerical relays such as Relion 600 series and Siprotec 5 series from ABB and SIEMENS respectively.
