Abstract

Skok analyses characteristics of the author’s language and style, especially her aphoristicity, moralizing and sententiousness as well as the typical Mažuranić literary tradition. Representatives of this tradition, he concludes, wrote »not only in quantities and volumes, but also concisely, in brief, not showing off with rich descriptions, long narrations or weak encouraging emotions«. The argument and the trend have been supported by linguistic and stylistic characteristics of Smrt smail age Čengića by D. Mažuranić, Pogled u Bosnu by Matija Mažuranić and vivid reminiscences in Lišće and Od zore do mraka by Fran Mažuranić.
Considering this is children’s literature, Skok as interpreter claims that I. Brlić Mažuranić »paid attention that aphorisms, morals and proverbs were as close as possible to natural statements of children’s concepts, thoughts and conclusions, and that children could understand and accept cases when they do not express them by themselves «.
It can be stated for sure that, in his study, Skok successfully realized Škreb’s thought that: »the purpose of interpretation cannot be to show expert’s professional mastery but to show only his artistic significance in interpreting a literary work. «
