Abstract

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the leading cause of death and disability in Europe. Croatian CVD mortality rates are more similar to rates in central and eastern European countries than those in other Mediterranean neighbours with lower CVD death rates. In this study, we have analysed available data (2016) for CVD mortality rates in ŠibenikKnin county. Despite the current decreasing trend of CVD mortality present in all Croatian counties (evident in all European countries as well), it is slower in Šibenik-Knin county, especially when compared to counties with the highest GDP and neighbouring southern counties. Smoking, alcohol consumption and blood cholesterol levels are still the main CVD risk factors. But, some other factors, such as the economic wealth, healthy lifestyle and education are becoming equally, if not more important.
