Abstract

Burning mouth syndrome is a complex chronic pain disorder of multifactorial origin. The syndrome presents a challenge during clinical work. The highest prevalence was observed in the female population. The average incidence between male and female is 7:1. The development of the syndrome is associated with local, systemic, psychological and neurological causes. Burning sensations usually spans the first two thirds of the tongue. Patients usualy have taste distuurbance and dry mouth sensation. Today's therapeutic approach includes medication therapy as well as behavioral and alternative methods. The purpose of this paper is to present burning mouth syndrome with a review of the therapeutic approach presented in the recent literature.
