Abstract

This paper deals with the formula curam agens as attested in the epigraphic material in Salona, where it appears in the context of public buildings for mass entertainment, such as Roman theaters and amphitheaters. Only in the area of the eastern Adriatic coast is this relatively rare formula combined with the specific type of buildings, the theaters and amphitheaters. This speaks in favor of the hypothesis that Roman games (ludi) were of exceptional importance in this area. As is well known, there are a number of amphitheaters and theaters that have been
identified in the territory that once belonged the Roman province of Dalmatia. These monuments illustrate the role of the Roman army and its officials in the procurement of materials for the construction and preservation of public buildings on the eastern Adriatic coast.
