Abstract

This paper provides a brief overview of previous bioarchaeological studies of osteological material from early modern sites in the Republic of Croatia, and thus gives an insight into the influence of natural elements on the past populations. Bioarchaeology is relatively new in Croatian archaeology, especially at early modern sites, which is why there are only a few systematically excavated sites. Accordingly, the author in the first part of the paper presents a general overview of and an introduction to bioarchaeology, with a focus on some basic indicators and factors, and in the second part of the paper the presence of these indicators and factors on samples is analyzed. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to point out the stress factors that have left their mark on the osteological material and by using a comparative method show how they manifest on the bones of the population from different geographical and ecological areas of the Republic of Croatia.
