Abstract

This paper came from eight years of fieldwork in Croatian disco clubs, on radio stations and from interviews with members of Croatian hip hop scene. The main method of research was participant observation. My intention was to analyse how one particular foreign culture – American hip hop – communicated with domestic Croatian culture, and to determine whether this process could be called transculturation. The next step was to find elements of Croatian culture in the new cultural entity called Croatian hip hop. The focus of research is on rap as a musical element of hip hop culture and on Zagreb as the largest urban area in Croatia. Through some main aspects and characteristics of transculturation, I analyse certain elements of Croatian rap such as language, topics, samples and specific Croatian hip hop vocabulary.
