Abstract
The paper begins with a short introduction in which the historical circumstances that led to the idea of release as a form of punishment, and thus the reform of the system of punishment of offenders, are listed. The rest of the paper discusses the reasons for deviating from the death penalty as a way of dealing with criminal behaviour and the parallel revival of the idea of deprivation of liberty. What follows is the reform of the prison system in the United States, which was the first to implement these ideas thanks to Quakers. The last chapter is devoted to the circumstances of the origin and characteristics of the main American prison systems of the «long» nineteenth century, Pennsylvania and Auburn.
