Abstract

The foundation of the international scientific cooperation in the area of geodesy (as absolutely first in the world generally!) is presented and especially the role of Johann Jakob Baeyer is clarified. Primarily the scientific work of J. J. Baeyer has been described, as well as his connection with Friedrich Wilchelm Bessel, especially with his well known rotation ellipsoid from 1841 (contribution to its 150 anniversary). After that the paper deals with the foundation of the first international geodetic association and its later growing under the Baeyer's influence until 1917. The importance of all presented constatations is also emphasized through the fact that the todays successes of this first organization is IUGG in which among 5 geophysical associations the IAG is also associated.
