Abstract

The scientifi c work of the philologist Stjepko Težak represents a linguistic
treasure which needs to be thoroughly investigated. Težak was very versatile in
the fi eld of philology. He conducted scientifi c research and was very successful in
studying and setting norms for the Croatian language, the history of the Croatian
language, the teaching methodology of the Croatian language and fi lm. He was
equally interested in the theory of language teaching, in stylistics, in the study of the
Croatian standard language and its dialects, in linguistic theory and communicative
practice, the past and the present of Croatian as his mother tongue.
The paper points out his scientifi c contribution to Croatian philology which
resulted in the publication of a scientifi c grammar of the Croatian language
(Povijesni pregled, glasovi I oblici hrvatskoga književnog jezika, HAZU – NZ
Globus, 1991), a grammar of the Croatian language (Težak-Babić, 1966, 1990,
1992) and a rich opus dedicated to the research of the history of Croatian through
its dialects, particularly the kajkavian-čakavian idiom of the Ozalj literary and
linguistic circle.
