Abstract

The paper presents results of the ethnographic research of the JeboTon ensamble, a group of
young street musicians on the streets of Zagreb. JeboTon is a group of members of different
bands who wanted to be part of the Zagreb music scene by playing on the street. Most members
of the JeboTon ensemble are young people in the age range of 20 to 30 years. They base
their activities on playing in public spaces in Zagreb, but also travel to other Croatian cities
and even abroad. The ethnographic study of JeboTon was carried out as part of the CHIEF
– Cultural Heritage and Identities of Europe’s Future project. Activities, organization and intragroup
dynamics were investigated through participant observation, while the materials collected
through semi-structured interviews were used in the analysis of the specific narratives of
individuals in the collective, as well as their attitudes regarding culture, the alternative scene
in Zagreb, the principles of collective action, and the role of public space in the reproduction
of cultural content.
In this paper we want to answer two research questions: how do young people active in the
JeboTon ensemble view their engagement in public space; how do young people active in the
JeboTon ensemble perceive public space as a place of cultural reproduction compared to other
spaces of cultural reproductions (for example, clubs)? In order to approach our research subject
in as much detail as possible, we approached the research of public space and cultural practices
using concepts that are close to different disciplines that investigate urban and public spaces -
such as urban sociology and anthropology - and disciplines that deal with culture and youth.
