Abstract

Primary megaureter is the main cause of hydronephrosis in almost a quarter of patients. Primary obstructive megaureter is a functional disorder of the ureter characterized by dilation of its lumen. With the establishment of prenatal ultrasound as the gold standard, there is an increasing incidence of prenatally detected megaureters. Whether the diagnosis has been established prenatally, or postnatally, thorough nephrologicalurological evaluation should follow. Almost 80% of primary obstructive megaureters are transitory. In patients
with no spontaneous resolution, conventional surgical treatment is recently often being replaced with a minimally invasive method – endoscopic baloon dilatation and JJ stenting. Even though currently deficient in long term results, current reports confirm baloon dilatation as a good method of first choice of treatment in patients with primary obstructive megaureter.
