Abstract

If avant-garde groups are categorized based on the extent of their manifestational output, initially it will seem that, in the Austrian context, there are only few texts perceived as such within this discursive field. However, if the field of avant-garde art practices is defined more broadly, for example to include music, painting or architecture, the results will change. This article addresses the framework and role of activism, which gained in importance from 1917 onwards. The third part of the article is dedicated to the achievements of Viennese Kinetism, its cross-connections with the Hungarian exile avant-garde around the journal »MA«, and spectacular exhibitions and theatre performances in Vienna around 1922–1925.
