Abstract

Gender-equitable language has been the subject of vigorous debate in both linguistics and society for several decades. Stemming from the women’s movement, the preoccupation with this topic has given rise to feminist linguistics, which seeks to ensure women’s visibility and equal treatment of women in language, achievable through non-sexist and gender-equitable language. This article provides an overview of the development of German feminist linguistics and explores the potential for the use of gender-equitable language.
