Abstract

Protective archaeological research in the Glavičine street, in the Mezanovac area of Solin, revealed a section of the Salona water supply canal and walls of a larger residential and economic building. The researched water supply line section is located slightly to the east from its previously assumed route. Other technical characteristics, profile and construction methods fully correspond to the properties of the Salona water supply line established by previous research. The discovery of a lead pipe added to the water supply canal, positioned relatively high above the canal bottom, confirms subsequent construction activities. The height of the pipe and stratigraphic relationships in the canal indicate that at the time the pipe was installed, the water supply canal was intentionally filled with earth, which also explains the observed height of calcification. Furthermore, the lead pipe, by a water distribution well and the canal, supplied water to the residential and economic building, the remains of which were found southwest of the water supply line. The cessation of functioning of the residential and economic building can be associated with the abandonment of the distribution well and with a new phase of urban development and transformation of the eastern suburban area of the Roman Salona. In the remaining part of the explored area, multi-layered relationships and dry-stone structures were found. The chronologically sensitive movable finds indicate a long period of use of this area, from the 1st century BC to the 7th century AD. More precise functional determinations and dating of the residential and economic complex will undoubtedly be provided by archaeological research conducted on the neighbouring land plot.
