Abstract

Attitudes are a key construct in the field of social sciences and beyond. With the growing interest in measuring attitudes, a need for a methodological guide which would describe good practices in the construction of attitude measurements arises. The goal of this paper is to satisfy that need. Using an example of a real construction of an attitude scale, all the relevant steps that an attitude researcher should take are described: from defining the attitude construct and the analysis of the results in the pre-investigation phase, to the steps the researcher should take to ensure and assess the validity of their measurement instrument in the investigation-phase proper. The potential researcher who adheres to the steps described would ensure greater validity and reliability in their studies of attitudes.
