Abstract

At the beginning of the article, an insight into recent theories of culture is given, especially in the so-called the »cultural turn« of the 1970s. The understanding of the connection between culture and space in the philosophy of space (M. Foucault, H. Lefevbre) and in the postmodern spatial models of American and British cultural geographers (E. Soja, D. Harvey, D. Massey) is then reported. This is followed by an overview of the key moments in the history of the Hvar Theatre, from its construction in the 17th century to the 1980s. The article concludes with an assessment of the importance of the Hvar Theatre Days for affirming the theater space as a space of culture.
