Abstract

The research was conducted in continental Croatia, Požega, in 2019. The research aimed to study the growth, quality and aesthetic values of marigold (Tagetes erecta) and petunia (Petunia hybrida) by measuring the morphological parameters (number of flowers/inflorescence and branches per plant, plant height, fresh flower/inflorescence weight, above-ground biomass and flower/ inflorescence diameter) in relation to different levels of water stress. The pot research was conducted in a greenhouse, set up as a randomized block design with three replications. Irrigation treatments were: a1 – 70% retention capacity (RC), a2 – 85% RC and a3 – 100% RC of the substrate. The humidity of the substrate had a significant (p<0.01) influence on the fresh above-ground biomass of marigold, fresh inflorescence weight and inflorescence diameter, and a significant (p<0.05) influence on plant height. Different irrigation treatments showed a significant (p<0.01) influence on the number of branches per plant and a significant (p<0.05) influence on the number of flowers per plant, fresh above-ground biomass and flower diameter. All the observed morphological properties increased proportionally with the increase in the irrigation ration, except for the number of inflorescence and branches of marigold, where the highest values were recorded in the treatment with mild water stress (a2).
