Abstract

In the last decade, there has been a significant increase in the number and variety of fungal diseases in both humans and animals. The irrational use of antimicrobials and immunosuppressive therapy in pets have contributed to a rise in infections caused by various types of fungi in veterinary medicine. Globalization, that has resulted in animals traveling more frequently, has increased the likelihood of the spread of infections caused by fungal species previously considered endemic to specific geographic areas. Diagnosing fungal diseases is complex, and there is often a limited choice of antifungal drugs, which can be a significant financial burden for the owner. Additionally, the growing occurrence of resistant strains poses an extra challenge for practitioners/clinicians. Despite the increasing awareness of fungal diseases in veterinary medicine, they still do not receive enough attention, leading to delayed diagnoses, often at an advanced stage. In such cases, increasing resistance to antifungal drugs can lead to severe forms of the disease with an unfavorable prognosis and a fatal outcome. The aim of this paper is to give a brief overview of fungal diseases and the need to work on the timely recognition of these infections and understand treatment options.
