Abstract

Employing city-level data from China over the period 2005 to
2017, this article examines how changes in house prices influence
the growth of industrial output. Econometric results show that rising
house prices have a negative and significant effect on industrial
growth. However, this effect holds only in the boom periods
and is higher for under-developed cities than for better-developed
cities in China. The findings add to our understanding of
effects of house price changes on the wider economy and carries
important policy implications
