Abstract

Taking processions as a way of creating futures, this article contributes to the discussions concerning the future of communities by exploring expressions of folk piety on the islands of Hvar and Rab in Croatia. Based on examining religious practices in two communities where individuals collectively participate in their continuous maintenance, the article discusses temporal cultural mechanisms as well as processes of repetition and representation for the sake of the future. Shared ritual movement is presented as providing a transformative impetus for the reproduction of the communities, and for the creation of a sense of a shared living space of the islands.
