Abstract

INTRODUCTION The World Health Organization describes obesity as one of the biggest public health challenges of the 21st century, and it is defined as an excessive amount of fat tissue in the body. Physical activity and exercise play an important role in a comprehensive treatment approach, but also in the prevention of obesity. The aim of the research is to compare the level of body mass index and muscle strength, waist circumference and the change in the speed of the Timed Up and Go test in obese people who participated in an organized exercise over a period of six months.
METHODS The subjects participating in the research are patients who visit the Obesity Outpatient Clinic and who participate in physical activity that is carried out twice a week at the premises of the Faculty of Health Studies in Rijeka. The data required for the implementation of the research were collected by measuring the height and body mass of the subjects, measuring muscle strength, waist circumference and their speed of performing the Timed Up and Go test.
RESULTS The research proved that there is a statistically significant difference in the reduction of body mass index after organized exercise (p < 0,001). Furthermore, there is no statistically significant connection between the increase in muscle strength and the decrease in body mass index and waist circumference after organized exercise. Also, in the examination comparing the improvement of the speed of performing the Timed Up and Go test in obese people who exercise in an organized manner, it was proven that there is a statistically significant difference in the speed of performing the Timed Up and Go test (p < 0,001).
CONCLUSION Physical activity and organized exercise have a positive effect on the reduction of obesity in the world. It is necessary to make the world's population aware of the numerous consequences that obesity brings with it, as well as to encourage regular physical activity and exercise.
