Abstract

In many countries, the educational system is characterized by a discrepancy between the official notion of a monolingual school offering foreign language classes to its students on the one hand, and a consistently multilingual reality of life and education, shaped by globalization and migration, on the other hand. Teachers are the ones who know how many languages the students in their classroom can speak and how these language experience can be constructively used in teaching languages. This article advocates the involvement of German teachers in school language policies in order to help shape multilingual schools.
