Abstract

High costs of sludge management generated during wastewater treatment and a growing interests in finding alternative energy sources resulted in different strategies of optimising biogas generation during anaerobic sludge treatment. Due to high contents of solid matter and a complex structure of organic compounds present in sludge, biogas generation is limited by hydrolysis as a limiting part of the anaerobic process.
The paper presents the results of a research that involved different chemical, physical, biological and hybrid processes of preliminary sludge treatment that accelerate the hydrolysis level and, consequentially, reduce the generation of this waste material and generate energy from biogas, thus reducing WWTP operative costs, as well as environmental pollution. In addition, the paper contains detailed descriptions of different processes of preliminary treatment, including their advantages and shortcomings, as well as data on their efficiency, viability and present status. It also provides data on technological and economic evaluation of some preliminary sludge treatment processes that are integrated in the sludge line before or after the anaerobic digester.
