Abstract

This research examined archaeological finds documenting the presence of Slavic elites prior to the emergence of Great Moravia. In the Central Danubian region, so-called Avar-type belt components and decorative horse harness elements have, in fact, been found outside Avar territory in settlement contexts that repeatedly also included hooked spurs. The objective was to explain how these artefacts were connected not only with the Avars, but above all with those elites who would later become the bearers of Great Moravian power. Additionally, based on the results of a spatial analysis, the affected settlements were classified and
the specific settlement zone was also identified. The established connections thus allow us to express the conviction that both the Great Moravian elites and the cultural sphere in which they operated have roots extending back into the pre-Great Moravian period.
