Abstract

Based on archaeological excavations, particularly the archaeological campaigns in 2021 focussing on the early medieval cemetery, and supported by anthropological analyses and historical sources, the authors seek to establish the economic and social structure of the estate in Rižinice and eventually to define the burial ground there as a deliberately organized space by using specific models, which could also be applied to other cemeteries within the territory of early medieval Croatia. Lastly,
they link such a type of burial organization to the primary social unit in rural areas: the household or kinship/court community, and thereby define its structure and size.
