Abstract

The author writes in the Grižane chakavian dialect about the traditions of ma nual labour, as a primarily female activity. The first part of the article contains a brief overview of the development in the production of textiles and the creation of fashion clothing during the last 5,000 years. It continues discussing the folk costumes of the region, which were formed by the mixing of various different influences. Clothes were made manually (knitting, weaving, embroidering, sew ing…), and every detail was different, depending on the skill and dexterity of the woman who made it. At the end of the article the author describes various types of hand work, with which in the past the women of Vinodol decorated their clothes and their families and their homes. Progress was also made by the Women’s Vocational School which was established in Crikvenica in 1902.
