Abstract

The Church of the God’s Mother of Snow in Belgrad, a place northwest of Grižane, is one of the oldest churches in Vinodol and a valuable historical monument of the sacral culture. After the Krbavska battle in 1493. in Vinodol a Modruš bishop with Kaptol hides away. Belgrad was the centre of Kaptol, the settlement of canons and church officials, and the Church of the God’s Mother of Snow was a so called Big church up until the unification of parishes in Belgrad and Grižane. Thanks to the priest Mikul Mužević the chapel from 1439. is incorporated into the new larger church, which is testified to by the Glagolitic inscription on the stone arch above the main portal of the church (1611). In the year 1640. the Church is builtup and extended, with an altar on the north side. The glagolitic nscription on the north wall of the temple, dated that year, mentions the vicar and church treasurer Mikul Mužević among other priests. Here are also found other Glagolitic inscriptions. A valuable organ is situated in the church, one of the rare instruments from the beginning of the 17th century. Not far from the church is the St. Mark’s chapel (giftchapel), and across from her is a wooden cross on which year 1962. is carved into it. Those were parts of the Way of the Cross from the time when the parishes in Grižane and Belgrad were separated.
