Abstract

ln this paper the authors have examined the influence of
selective exposure to television on the perception of political
space by means of testing the differences in evaluations of
the major actors, in competition with status characteristics of
the public. The results indicate that the consequences of
exposure, in a context which is extremely favourable for the
political influence of television, are relatively limited. Without
changing the general trend, they amount to differences in
evaluating the ruling, but not the oppositional options. The
latter are thus perceived as more homogeneaus. The results
also correspond with Gerbner's hypotheses on the partial
reduction of political consequences of social status due to
mere exposure and with more contemporary theoretical
viewpoints on the minimal effects of exposure.
