Sacramental Life, Perception Of Sin In Sexual Morality, And Religious Progressivism

Abstract
This research aimed to determine the following: (1) whether there exists an internally coherent attitudinal construct that reflects the ideology of religious progressivism, (2) the relationship between sacramental life and sexual morality, (3) the connection between religious progressivism and sexual morality, and (4) the influence of sacramental life on the latent configuration of religious progressivism and sexual morality. The study was conducted with a sample of 327 adult respondents, all Croatian Catholics from Šibenik (Croatia) and Subotica (Serbia). Factor analysis of the scale measuring religious progressivism revealed two underlying dimensions: (a) indifferentism/universalism and dogmatic relativism, and (b) synodic ecclesiality. Regular attendance at Sunday Mass, monthly Confession, and receiving Communion every Sunday were found to have a weak impact on how certain forms of sexual behaviour are viewed as serious sins. The results of the regression analysis showed that the aspects of religious progressivism significantly predict hostile attitudes toward sexual morality. Canonical discriminant analysis found that indifferentism/universalism and dogmatic relativism were much less common among respondents who attended Mass, confessed, and received Communion more often, while these individuals had a stronger perception of sin related to sexual morality.
