Moral Anxiety after the Liberal International Order

Abstract

The author examines two moral narratives and the moral anxiety they generate in the West during the period following the liberal international order. Current developments in international politics seem to foster more exclusive political and moral communities than in the past several decades of the global liberal order, with moral justifications often employed to support these trends. This has led to a clash between two distinct moral narratives: one that justifies the exclusivity of political and moral communities, emphasizing self-protection and the safeguarding of core values, and another that advocates for inclusiveness, promoting moral cosmopolitanism. Ultimately, the dominant moral narrative may play an important role in shaping the future of the global political order.
