Abstract
From the earliest beginnings of medicine and healthcare in our region, doctors, and later also members of other healthcare professions, were foreigners. Initially, the reason was that there were no schools and faculties in our region where various medical professions could be studied. Later, partly due to political and historical events (wars, large population migrations, persecution of Jews, disappearance and creation of new states, changes in legislation, etc.), and partly due to demographic changes and the aging of the workforce and the decreasing attractiveness of this type of work to new generations, the need for healthcare personnel, including foreigners, has been increasing. By selecting the most significant medical contracts, data on the salaries of doctors, and the work of foreign pharmacists who worked and resided in our region, the author sought to present the contribution they made to the develop-
ment of Croatian healthcare through the centuries.
