Abstract
Self-image, self-concept or self-respect and test anxiety are very important concepts for school achievement, not only in terms of school grades but also for the normal psychological and physical development of each child. The aim of this examination is to assess self-respect and determine the level of test anxiety in a sample of elementary school children. The examination data will be the basis of the program "Improving self-concept of primary school pupils in the Šibenik-Knin area". We examined 214 pupils from fifth to eighth grades in Elementary school "Knin" during September and October 2002. We measured self-concept with Coopersmith's inventory for self-concept (SEI) and test anxiety with SKAD (Scale of anxiety for children, Vulić-Prtorić, 2004).
School achievement was calculated as the mean of grades for school subjects with the greatest variability, as evidenced in school grades registers. The results of ANOVA show no significant differences in self-concept and test anxiety depending on grades and gender. We found a significant positive correlation between self-confidence and school achievement and a significant negative correlation between test anxiety and self-concept, as well as between test anxiety and school achievement. ANOVA shows that pupils with different levels of self-concept differ in school achievement as do pupils with different levels of test anxiety.
