Abstract

Contemporary trends in educating social workers point out the need for education including gender/sex issues and perspective. Thus the lecturers and assistant lecturers of the Department of Social Work participated in the seminars «Gender Issues in Social Work», which took place in the year 2003 and lastedall together six days. The purpose of the seminar was to educate and sensitise the participants to issues of gender and sex in the work of social workers, and initiate thoughts and ideas about integrating this subject-matter into the education programme of the Department of Social Work as the first step to creating a gender/sex sensitised curriculum. The evaluation of the seminar showed that the participants were satisfied with the seminar, its content and organisation. The paper gives a review of the seminar content which has been divided into two parts. The first refers to the process of socialisation and its influence on forming the identity of a woman. It also discusses the distribution of power between men and women. In the second part several suggestions have been given for further social work with women.
