Abstract

In the first part of this article the foundations and the importance of tribology in the materials science and materials engineering are provided with the emphasis on polymeric materials. The basic principles are described together with the new experimental approach for investigation of the scratch resistance that take into account the viscoelasticity and brittleness of polymer materials. The testing methods based on the wear particles with the measurements of changes in mass and/or volume are not enough reliable. The possibility of quantitative measure of wear is based on the method of multiple scratching of polymer material surfaces. Tribological properties are in correlation with the surface energy of materials.
