Abstract

The focus of the paper is pragmatic concept of politeness and its relation towards sociolinguistic notions as deference, mannerliness and courtesy. Terminological definition of politeness is determined and problems considering various synonyms of that term are marked. The paper mentions the most relevant contemporary theories of politeness and their authors. Usage of politeness strategies is divided on verbal and nonverbal communication situations and various forms of mentioned strategies usage in different segments of human life are mentioned. Some of most important theories and classifications of nonverbal communication are specified. The effort is made to compare strategies of politeness in verbal and nonverbal communication.
