Abstract

The aim of this pilot study was to investigate the applicability of constructivist teaching and critical thinking to sociological education at secondary school level. The paper deals with the assumption that contemporary sociological education at secondary school level can be improved by using the instructional aspects of constructivist teaching and critical thinking. A typical lesson was organised relating to all the conceptual demands. The constructivist teaching concept was implemented at the organisational level and the critical thinking concept – as a controlling concept – was implemented at content level (high-order thinking skills) to investigate how deeply content had been internalised. Research findings suggested the applicability of constructivist teaching and critical thinking to sociological education and also their connection at the planning and implementation level.
