Abstract

The author analyses in the paper two sources of the dire plight of con-
temporary education, its uncitical faith in a universal and irreversible
progress in all fields of life and thought and its dogma of value relati-
vism. He argues that both prejudices are incorrect, a point of view which
he expounds and defends in his other papers in greater detail, but whose
essential traits he applies here with special relation to the gradual but
inevitable closing of the human mind which is the consequence of these
false opinions in schools and universities. In conclusion he sketches a
possible antidote to these deleterious conformist ideas and emphasises
the importance of inquiry and philosophic openness and of the nonin-
strumental use of reason.
