Abstract

Despite significant improvements in therapeutics, acute kidney injury (AKI) is still
associated with high morbidity and mortality. One of the main reasons is delayed detection
and initial therapy.
There are some novel biomarkers which can help in dignostics of AKI. The most promising
among them is neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL). This article discusses the
role of NGAL and means of its measurment in various clinical samples which cause AKI. It is
important to validate sensitivity and specificy of these biomarkers in future clinical studies.
