Abstract

Only one third of those patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) who received
dialysis treatment in Croatia are registered on the waiting list for a cadaveric kidney transplant.
For majority of patients transplantation is not possible because of various contraindications.
The main reason is a steadily growing age and therefore higher incidence of cardiovascular
disease and diabetes. Before including patients in the waiting list, potential kidney
transplant recipients should undergo a rigorous selection and evaluation. It is necessary to
treat concomitant diseases which can influence patient’s and transplant’s survival. After including
patients on waiting list, it is obligatory to evaluate them and look for potential contraindications.
In that case they have to be temporarily or permanently removed from the
waiting list.
