Sažetak
The paper is a survey of literature data on mean exposure of the human population to ionizing radiation from natural sources, nuclear explosions and sources used for medical and scientific purposes. The results of current investigations on biological effects of ionizing radiation are described. The effects seem to be linearly related to the dose. This implies that there is no absolutely safe dose of radiation. For this reason the recommendation of the International Commision on Radiological Protection (ICRP) is presented. Special emphasis is laid on a recommendation of the ICRP that a maxi· mum permissible dose (MPD) for members of the public should amount to 0.5 rem a year (which is ten times lower than MPD for occupationally exposed workers), in order to reduce a possibility of genetic disorders in future generations.
