Sažetak

Many injuries today are treated with immobilization, because it is well-known that resting is good for healing of soft tissues as well as bones. From the middle of the nineteenth century a casting tape (Plaster of Paris) was being used more and more frequently as a material for immobilization. In the last few decades new materials were introduced for this purpose, and today they are a great competition to the classical casting tape. There are many synthetic materials for immobilization today, made from different chemical components. They have some important advantages in comparison with casting tape: they are durable, lightweight, waterproof and allow X-rays. A disadvantage is that they are more expensive than the plaster of Paris. In this article some of the most frequently used materials for immobilization from synthetic materials are described, the ways of their use, indications etc. According to their advantages materials will take an important place when an immobilization is indicated in the future.
