Sažetak
Infanticide (active and passive) is defined as a mother’s homicide of her newborn child, maximum 24 hours after the birth. It has been proved that infanticide is a result of interaction of mother’s social, cultural, and individual characteristics. They are usually adolescents and young women, unmarried, living with their parents or relatives who have strong religious custom against pre-marriage sexual intercourses. Infanticide mothers can also be middle-age women, married, already mothers and to whom infanticide is method of dealing with unwanted female newborn children. Denial of pregnancy is the most prominent risk factor of infanticide. It can be form of self-defense mechanism for unwanted pregnancy and it is especially found in insecure and isolated pregnant women, but also a way of refusing making any decision, very often found in incest victimized women, and psychically ill infanticide mothers. Is it possible prevent infanticide? Not in total, but since adolescents are risky for infanticide, the sexual education and education about contraception including in school process represent for this population the best way to prevent unwanted pregnancy. Conducting a good family planning program for young couples is also a good method for preventing infanticide. Off course, all of this, united with easy accessible contraception and legally allowed abortion. Changing of social stigma and not judging of unwanted pregnancy could decrease incidence of infanticide as a method of dealing with unwanted pregnancy.
