Sažetak

Neurodevelopmental disorders are common in the pediatric population, patients manifest with a heterogeneous spectrum of clinical diagnoses and potentially require lifelong specialized support. Despite significant progress in understanding the biological mechanisms of neurodevelopmental disorders, there are no biomedical markers, and the diagnosis is made solely on the basis of behavioral deviations. The challenge of early detection is the initiative of early intervention with the aim of positively redirecting atypical patterns in a timelimited period of high brain development activity, in the period between the onset of damage and the diagnosis of a neurodevelopmental disorder. The content and method of conducting early intervention should be individualized, structured and coordinated according to the risk profile of an individual child. Preconditions for successful treatment are team approach, a relationship of trust with the family, acceptance of the diagnosis by parents and their active participation in problem solving. The most successful interventions are those adjusted to the family, the child and their interaction. The aim of this paper is to present the methods of early detection, diagnostic process and early intervention models in the light of the knowledge of developmental neuroscience through a review of the literature on the theoretical understanding and comprehensive clinical approach to neurodevelopmental disorders.
