Sažetak
Over the years, interest in translating poems by Mihai Eminescu into Serbian has not
been very high, especially because of the difficulty of the vocabulary used or the untranslatability
of Eminescu’s expressions into Serbian. Although Serbian and Romanian belong to
different language families, Eminescu’s most famous poems have been translated very successfully
by bilingual speakers, who knew Serbian very well and understood Eminescu’s
message. The translators of Eminescu’s poetry tried to keep the form, rhythm and lyrical
message unaltered in the Serbian translations. The critical reception of Eminescu in the
Serbian linguistic space is also not very high. In this paper we will try to give an overview
of Eminescu’s reception in Serbia. We will focus on three aspects: the translations of the
poems, the criticism of Eminescu’s work in Serbia and the presence of Eminescu’s verses
in textbooks in the Serbian province of Vojvodina. The purpose of this research was to
discover how well Serbian students and readers know the work of the greatest Romanian
poet Mihai Eminescu. We have found out that the work of Eminescu is more researched
than it is studied in schools. Eminescu is misunderstood and very little commented on
by students and teachers, but when his poems are memorized and recited at school
productions, Eminescu’s verses are found to be more interesting, and this encourages
students to discover more of his work. Romanian students are becoming more aware of
the importance of knowing something about Eminescu’s work and his life. Expressions
Eminescu used in his work contributed to the enrichment of the Romanian vocabulary.
