External Evaluation of Eighth-grade Pupils in the Domain of General Geography

Sažetak

The paper analyses eighth-grade pupil achievements in the external evaluation exam in the domain of General Geography in the 2007/2008 school year. The study was conducted on a sample of 500 randomly selected tests. The results were compared with the results of the school pupil population that attended the external evaluation exam (21 485 eighth-grade pupils). The objectives of the research were to determine the level of achievement in basic geographic knowledge and skills at the end of compulsory education, the comparison of achievements in the domain of General Geography with the achievements in Geography of Europe and Geography of Croatia domains, and to carry out quantitative analysis of the results of specific test particles in the domain of General Geography according to knowledge dimensions and type of tasks. The level of pupil achievement in the General Geography domain is not satisfactory, because the percentage of test particles solvability
is 40%. Achievements in the General Geography domain are lower in comparison with the Geography of Europe domain by 1.9 percentage points, and to the Geography of Croatia domain by 9.1 percentage points. The results achieved in testing the knowledge of facts in the domain of General Geography (71.7%) were significantly better than the results of conceptual (41.4%) and procedural knowledge (31.3%), as were the results in closed-ended tasks (59.8%) in comparison with the results of the semi closed-ended tasks (39.8%) and open-ended tasks (27.8%).
