Abstract

This article is founded on an analysis of the results of empirical research conducted as part of a project »Subsidiarity in Croatian society« headed by Professor Stjepan Baloban, and conducted in December 2009. A sample of exactly 1000 participants from 70 towns was taken - i.e. 100 sample points. The research was conducted on a probable selection, a multi-strata systematic stratification sample of adult population in Croatia. The article analyses these questions: What are the basic sources of information for Croatian citizens?; What media in Croatia is dedicated to certain social categories?; What media in Croatia respects the beliefs and attitudes of various religious groups, agnostics and atheists?; Is the public in Croatia today more or less under the influence of politics, capital and the media than it was prior to 1990?; Does the fear of expressing one's own opinion still exist in Croatia?; Are the media in the service of realising common good?; To what measure are the media dedicated to annihilating injustice in society when disclosing various affairs?; To what extent are freedom and independence of journalists under the influence of capital and media magnates, politics, market demands, etc. ? Finally, the issue of trust placed in various media? These questions are analysed in reference to some fundamental socio-demographic features, political orientation and general religious determinants of those surveyed. The article starts from a general hypothesis about the significance of the media in developing modern Croatian society. It also sets out several working hypothesis that are tested through an analysis of the results of empirical research. In conclusion some opinions, based on the principle of subsidiarity, are presented.
